"Another question on heating & A/C"

   Well...

I have gotten two quotes on a furnace and an A/C. The Lennox offering from one dealer is not quite double the Rheem offering from the other.

The Rheem A/C is using the R22 refrigerant vs. the newer R410 in the Lennox... Both furnaces are about 92 - 94% efficient.

But my question now is: Are these two companies so different to justify the wide price differential... or are we talking about dealer costs & profits. Any experience with these brands?

Thanks

Jim

We got 5 or 6 quotes ranging from 6,000 to 16,000 +.
We went with a Friend of the Family at 8900. Then he knocked off another 200 because we paid cash. So $8700.00 bottom line.
Furnace
Condencer
And Mike supplied the rest of the stuff. And a 3 1/2 ton Trane evap coil. And it's 410a refrigerant.
(We don't need a 90+ heater because our winters are so mild.)

R-22 is being phased out. So I didn't want to get stuck with a system that might be real costly to repair shortly down the road.
Scratch around here.
And specifically here.

I can only say that last year I purchased a Rheem over the internet instaled it myself with the duct work. It is a 92% model 120 BTU and was easy to hook up since they are complete units. They whole thing was finished under 2k. PS, it did a hell of a job this winter my heating bills dropped 25%. The mark-up on these seem very high to me.

Sounds like you got a "Package" unit, Tom.
All in one.
They won't allow us to put those in where I live. Totally assonine in my opinion, but how it flys around here.
What we replaced was a Rheem. No complaints about it from me, mind you. 23 years is good service from a unit.
But the efficiencies are always improving.

(The compressors are all made by one company in Texas, reguardless of the name on the outside.)

The quote I got from Rheem for installation of the furnace & central A/C was a bit less than 5K. The Lennox offering was a bit over 9K.

The consensus (also at DIY.com) is that Trane and Rheem trump Lennox and a host of others.

So it comes down to this:
Do you want to get Rheem'd...
Or would you like a Trane up yours?

I'd been Rheem'd.
So we got a Trane. And we are happy butts about it!

The Trane fellow comes by tomorrow for an estimate. Then, I'll have 3. I'll let you know...

Having just finished my first HVAC class I'm not extremely knowledgable as of yet, but I do know that as Sonny mentioned the
R-22 is being phased out rather sooner than later. Whatever brand you go with I would make sure it has the 410a in it, btw we just had two heat pump units (carrier's with 410a, one upstairs and one down) installed last summer, haven't had a lick of trouble and kept us warm all winter and cool last summer.
just my .02
good luck with whatever you decide on.

R22 units haven't been manufactured since '06. Many distributors stock piled them last year because of the price differences.

Make sure when comparing prices that you compare apples to apples. Make sure that btu's and seer ratings are equal from quote to quote.

And real important, compare warranties. For example, make sure labor is included in the warranty. No one likes to get a $40 part covered, but pay $200 to get it installed.

In my area Bryant and Carrier are giving full parts and labor for ten years.

For me it's like buying a car, some dealers can be trusted, some are looking for a quick sale.
