Have any of you used these alcohol-soluble dyes. I found a deal on some ngr dye stains by Star. I'm going tomorrow to buy a bunch. I think it might fix my problem with my splotchy, light, pigment-stained coffee table. I just read "undertanding wood finishing" this weekend. That is one great book. I couldn't put it down; I just bought it Saturday. And what is the shelf life on these stains. Any quick responses would be much appreciated. Thanks!

i use water based dyes because i don't own spray equipement and (supposedly, as i've never used them) alcohol based dyes flash off too quickly to get even results by hand.
If you've got a spray gun then i think you'll love the results and flexibilty in color.
As for my experience with waterbased stuff. It's super easy to apply (mop it on with a rag and wipe off excess to even it out). I've tried dark colored dyes on maple and birch (two of the most blotchy woods)and found the results satisfactory. I have to believe the results are at the very least better than any other staining option (excluding using toners).

That's great news because I spent about $100 yesterday on several gallons of different dye stains. I found it at an industrial distributer. They were getting rid of the stock and sold it all to me for just a hair over cost. What a deal!
