I'm having trouble making straight cuts. I'm using a 10" bench saw and if the miter gauge comes back too far, my cuts are never square. I tried flipping the miter gauge around, but that didn't help.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Normally you should make a sled. This is a board with a back guide and bottom runner to fit in the miter slot.

However the primary problem may be your saw. This is a common complaint with bench saws and is one of the justifications of moving up to a contractors saw.

Bench saws are for making small stuff. They generally don't have the accuracy and stability for larger work. Bench saws are also used as a job-site saw. In this case portability is more of a concern than accuracy. While there are execptions, most bench saws are not used for serious woodwork.

Hi Bill
What are you cutting?...(dimensions?) Have you tried attaching an auxiliary fence to you miter gauge? Have you placed a square against the blade and miter gauge to see if they're square to each other? Is the miter slot square to the blade? Post some specifics and you'll get some better help...
