this suggestion works good for "ALOT" of sawdust problems OR using a piant sprayer like painting a car. A guy could put up one of those track guided cloths, like the ones doctors use around the beds. Install the track around the area where the car or project would sit while it is being painted. Then pull the cloth around on that track (like the doctors do) then you can cut, spray, or sand and not cover your bench, tools and stuff.

I used to have my shop in my basement, right next to where my band rehearsed. I tried exactly what you're suggesting and found that the stuff went everywhere anyway. I then took to actually duct taping tarps to the ceiling and floor and literally closing myself in to work. This worked pretty well for sanding dust, but the sprayer still went everywhere until I bought a whole-house exhaust fan and put it in a window facing out. That worked great.
