hi,
I am trying to take up wood working. I have some basic experience from my younger days in school working with wood. I would like your advice on purchasing a wood vice.

I really cannot afford very much. I recently saw a table vice with a 3 inch jaw width in a store going for an affordable price. Would that be of sufficient size to work on most small projects (e.g. a small cabinet)? I'm wondering if the vice will be able to hold a wood the size of half a newspaper while I saw away...

Also, I have a old wood saw and a really small hand plane. How do i sharpen the blade on these items?

Thanks very much to whoever responds.

A three inch vise will be acceptable if you are working on very small woodworking projects. I recommend a cheap 7" or 9" woodworkers vise. You can find a cheap one at www.harborfreight.com.

You can find info on plane blade sharpening at www.shavings.net/SCARY.HTM

Info on saw sharpening is at www.vintagesaws.com/library/primer/sharp.html
