Help.

Years ago as a woodshop instructor I did a project from plans from Jennings Products, Hendersonville, TN.. The project, a rolltop breadbox, required a tape to tape the 14 strips of 3/4X3/16X143/8 together to from the roll top. The plans suggested a special tape used by the automotive industry to repair metal be used to secure the wood together. At the time, I found a tape that would work, but being many years ago have forgotten where I got it and what is was. I have to date contacted Meisel, Rockler and Woodworkers Supply with not luck. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jimp

One of the thins I do is build stage sets. We make flats nd paint sceans on them. The same technique will work in this application. We glue muslin over a frame. The glue should be white or yellow glue. I would cut a piece of muslin the sise of youf rolling top, place the wood strips on the bench, drape the muslin over the wood strips ans rub the glue through the fabric. The glue will stick the wood to the fabric and still leave the fabric flexable enough to be use in this application.

Give it a try. just use enough glue to get through the fabric. and not enough to glue the strips together. a small piece of waxed paper between the strips will keep them from being glued together.

Good luck

Jimp:

I too build a rolltop breadbox. I use a method similar to that described by the that other post except, I use canvas to back the tambor staves. I cut mine about 3" more narrow than the staves and apply yellow glue to the canvas. Not a heavy coat. Don't want it to squeeze out between the staves. Then using a two fences which form a 90 degree angle, I start placing the staves on the canvas. After allowing them to sit, with a weight, for about 15 - 20 min, I roll the tambor so that none are stuck together. I also stain the slats prior to placing them on the canvas to prevent staining problems. I don't stain the back area that will be glued however.

Works for me. Give it a try if you can't find your tape.
