I want to build a case for my CD collection (approximately 300 to 400 discs) to replace the Sauder towers that they have been living in for the past decades. I'm not looking for plans, just inspiration. If anyone has built a CD rack, I'd love to see them, or point me in the direction of a website that has some nice ones. Thanks.

Our own Woodmangler (a.k.a. Roadsidehelperman) made a VHS tape cabinet a while back.

You can get the racks for the inside from Rockler

and make the cabinet to suit your needs.......

I'm just about at your point---I built some rotating racks which have just about outlived their usefulness and am preparing to build a new storage cabinet.

First, I would say storing them horizontally, like Woodmangler's neat design, is a first must. In my new plan, however, instead of stacking them, I plan on putting them in drawers, which makes them easier to see in that you don't have to bend down to see the titles in the lower part of the rack.

Second, I'd really suggest staying away from the built-in slots and go with open bins. Reason being, many CD cases are double or tripple sized, or made of cardboard, etc. and don't always fit those slots.

If you watched Norm's CD case project, he let the CDs just rest in the drawers, with a backer board to keep less than a full drawer of CDs from flopping over. My plans are to eliminate that backer board----I'll just use a block of styrofoam to take up space. Pretty much like the look of his, so mine will just be a larger version. Hope this gives you a couple of other ideas.
