Now I'm hoping y'all won't be tool snobs here, as I really want to start turning...NOW! Y'all have given me the bug BIG TIME!

I have the Ryobi lathe. I know it's shortcomings, and I won't be turning 50 lb bowls eh... but if I could even turn a small filial or "ring bowl" like Sonny I'd be happy! I'll do all I can to make it better, including filling the hollow tubes with lead or something, and bolting it down securely to a heavy bench...

Today's my birthday, and I've been given a whopping $40 (moving can break the bank big time...especially when you make your living with your tools and they're 5 hours away) and I'm going to buy turning tool(s)...

Penn State has a chisel set for $39... I guess it's for pens (which I have NO desire to make) and they're HSS. I have a lathe, face plate, spur center, live center, tool rest, and even a variable speed motor...what I don't have is any turning tools.

So...what would you suggest just so I can start? $40 aint diddley I know, but it's all I got for awhile until I get moved and back in business....

This set for $59 ? I'm not sure I can get the LOML to cough up a little extra...but it's worth a shot

or this set for $39 ?

Is there another "deal" out there that beats this?

Thanks....

Marc,

Did you look at Grizzly? Their prices on Robert Sorbys are better than several others but they also carry a Marples 3 piece set for $40.00, and an unnamed 8 piece HSS set for $50. I have a set of wood Marples chisels that I have used for a number of years that I think are quite nice. Just a thought.

Get the top set mangler If you want the bottom set I'll post them to ya. It'll be worth the postage to get rid of them!! I'm just too cheap to throw them away.
That little RYOBI looks super neat , where dya get it and do they still make them.
I want one of them >>>>>>

Tell her tax on fags has gone up ...(cigarettes) in a week you can get the extra bucks that way.

Cheers limey

Mark,
I bought Delta's set for the midi lathe for 50.
Now I did get 10% off the top because I "own" stock in my local tool store. (according to the family anyhow)
But you have all the essentials to go. I used 2 chisles out of the new set last night to make that tiny bowl. Two short strips of sandpaper. And some Scotch-brite to polish it.
Bro, I think you could do well at flea markets turning. Honest I do.
It goes pretty fast, and I was running on only what little I have picked up in the way of knowledge.
Double sided carpet tape from Wal-Mart stuck the chunk of wood to the ply piece screwed to the face plate and turned round.
I can really see the furvor about turning. It's a really quiet form of woodworking.
I was just dicking around and right out of the gate there come that tiny bowl.
As always, the first I give to Betty. It's only right. And she loves it. Made me brand it and I signed and dated it for her. She can't wait to show it to the kids. I guess it's an instant winner.

Dave P. emailed me some info about vacuum chucking. That's more of a production thing, but hey, you are a guy who makes his living doing production runs. Go look at Dave site and click into the lathes and tools page.

You might not need to look much further than one or two of the chisles you have now to go. Just regrind them to get to turnin. :)
Give it a shot.

Sunny <---(payback mispelling :) )

I don't have ANY turning tools! Gotta get some, today, or the birthday money disappears... it's a birthday rule or sumptin...

I've turned one thing... a 6" oak spindle I did when I got the lathe, and I had to grind and sharpen an old screwdriver to do that. I just went and looked for it to take a pic, and I must have thrown it away... that was dumb as it would have made kind of a neat keepsake... oh well...

MarC,
Please accept my humble appologise.
What I was getting at was grinding down any old chisle you might have.
You do realise that is a SPINDAL turning set don't you? Which is fine.
Bowl tools are a smidgen different.
But any tools beat the heck out of none.
Think along these suggested lines:
Shot glasses, wooden eggs, juice glasses, flower vases with tiny dried flowers in them, ........ Hummmm.....

Agian, Sorry for this misspelling. Just toooo excited I guess, I mustta "turned" my brain of for a moment. LOL :)
