Eye candy.
I gaze through catalogs in the mornings at work while others read the morning papers, waiting for the days assignments.
Many I read time and time again.
So I pick up a Sears Craftsman I had opened to a lathe like Limey and Dick have.
Gazing at the duplicator thing for $159.95, pondering Lou's 100 spindels. Knowing Delta as well sells somthing like this for a much higher price.
And on a page back is chucks and I study them. Had I not sent all the metal lathe tools up with my youngest Son I would be reaching for those from my shelf instead of in my mind. Sigh!
And at the upper half of the page are Sorby turning chisels. Individuals, sets, specialty. And I study them.
And the boss asks why the if druel on my chin and if I'm OK, because my eyes are kinda glassy.
Sorby's at Sears. And there's one just a little out of the way on my way home....... :o

And yesterday I was helping Betty bring in groceries and a UPS truck pulls up. My heart leaps. (I'm expecting a new baby for the lathe.)
Then he delivers to the folks next door. :(
Sigh! Big Sigh!

Maybe I should read the lies and distorted hype in the paper.
Naw.... I'll just be more careful about druleing around folks I guess.

...it's Davey Jones locker for ya....

We're gonna have to change the expression "sink or swim" to "turn or swim"... and you ain't got a PFD.... :)

couple of weeks bro... couple of weeks... and we can both flounder... :)

It is becoming evident to me that Sorbys is one of the premiere manufacturers of turning chisels or this is what I am being led to believe. Who are some of the other Big Boys in that game and how do their prices compare?

The Sorby's chisels at Sears ..........are they top of the line or some where else............are they the same ones Woodcraft sells? I wonder how to find this out?

What about if you found a machinist that would make chisels and then you could put handles on them. Where would you get the size/shape specs for the chisels?

Other than Sorby, there is Henry Taylor, Hamlet, Sheffield Leyland, Oneway, Record and Marples. There are probably several more. I haven't had any experience with Oneway or Record but own tools from the rest. My personal preferences have leaned toward Sorby and Sheffield Leyland. The Hamlet tools are nice but a bit more expensive.

I got an EQ bag, does that count?
Oh, yeah, earthquakes are different on the ocean.
Now where would I put a personal floatation device in the shop? :7

"And there are probably others"
Yep, my nine Deltas made in China. :o
But the got me rolling for now, And I won't mind doing "experimental" grinding on them.
From the spark travel/ explosion pattern they do have a pretty hard steel in them.

Maybe the Ellsworth will get here today. Hope, hope.

Here Dick, I went and found the link for comparison shopping. I would think a Robert Sorby is a Robert Sorby.
Kinda like Levi's is Levi's.
But then Marc sez I'm all wet without a PFD. Actually it is druel agian.

I have both Sorby and Record. I have a Record Lathe and I bought 3 chisels when I got the lathe. I had the Sorbys from the failed attempt to use a drill mounted lathe a few years ago.

Both groups of tools are very high quality. The only difference I can find is the color of the handles. The Records are dark and Sorby's are light.

Limey,

My skew is the sorby oval 3/4 model. I have been trying to go by the book, and it catches all the time. I can get half a bead and think I am home free, and bam. Out comes the roughing gough to get back to a cyclindar instead of a mangled thing.

I will try your approach both on the grind and the angle of attack.

I need to take a class and have some one watch me and tell me why I an a klutz.

I find I learn easier if I can watch someone do it. I've learned a lot of my woodturning by watching videos that I borrowed from the public library and our woodturners' guild.

Checkout http://www.a1studio.freeserve.co.uk/ This website has a few online videos that you can download demonstrating various common cuts. In the video demonstrating beads he uses a beading/parting tool instead of the skew, but the technique is exactly the same.

I am still trying to learn to use my skew for planing cuts without getting dig-ins but I am getting much better at using it for cutting beads.

Sonny,

FWIW, Grizzly also sells Sorby tools. In fact I just got an order from them today for 4 of my starter set recommended by Limey et al. From what I can see, the prices in Grizzly are the best so far of all the catalogs I've looked at including your Sears.com. The tools were exactly the same as those I saw in the Wodcraft store in Kansas City. I am awaiting the last two pieces.

Marilyn,
Does that include shipping charges? Hummmm? Now come clean,
Did you get gigged on the shipping? Hummmmm?
LOL! :)
Yep, glad to here your almost there.
I HATE waiting for chit to ship in. I'm waiting for an Ellsworth bowl gouge right now. It sucks to wait.
I want it, and I want it NOW! Waaahhh! :)

Why is this thread so that it takes me ten minutes to scroll across to read?
Don't tell me it's the settings on my 'puter all the other threads fit neatly on the visible screen.

Anyway as far as I know all Sorby's are Sorby's.
Sears prices aren't all that good but for Sonny they are like the local drug dealer and when in need of a fix ..which the boy desparately is... money is not the primary consideration, availability is... Oh and Sonny (DF) don't get tempted to buy any of the lathe accessories ...they stink.
That from someone with Crapsman tatooed on his butt. (Don't worry Marc I'm not going to post a photo. BTW where did you get the tattoo done, I can't say that it suits you,

I think the choice of tools is a fad thing and Sorby has managed to find the cache in US.
Henry Taylor did have a good name years back but started down marketing about 10 years ago.
I use Ashley Isles in the main...no I haven't found them over here.
I want to try Packards www.packardwoodworks.com as they are super nice people to deal with and I guess if the truth is known all the chisels and gouges come out of the same hole in the ground.
Sheffield in England became world famous for steel but as over here...Pittsburgh ?...very little is left of the Steel industry in Sheffield.
Crown Tools ...how can I put this politely..er generally were not seen as serious competitors...can I be sued for saying that?

lou should really get onto his Son in law who hails from Sheffield I do believe to do some ferreting and get the skinny for us.

Bill posted a thread from Peter Childs turning and would say that I have a good friend who lives close by his place and smallplug...They are very good and efficient at sending stuff.
Lest I forget.. BIG difference if you don't know ...The majority of prices quoted from UK based companies include 17.5 % VAT (value added tax) indeed if you find anyone who advertises in small letters (exc. VAT) then it is assumed by the general populace to be a rather shady and nefarious practice.
So when they export you can take off seventeen and a half percent !!
Yippee ...however don't forget shipping.
Small companies Like Peter Child only charge you actual postage so it does work out cheaper.
If it's an expensive item they will...anybody listening...value it at wholesale price so that Customs duty is not attracted..

I'm going now before I get a visit from Lawyers and customcs officials.

Cheers Limey

AND happy scrolling unless somebody knows a fix !!!!

Woodcraft also beats the Sears prices. I got my Sorby 3/8" bowl gouge for $45.00 on sale. (Normally $49.99) Sears price is $54.99. The real trouble with going to Woodcraft is, I always seem to find a lot of other things there that I didn't know I needed. Last time I was there, Carol was surpised that I only spent $150. I usually spend over $200! She never complains because she gets nearly everything that I make. Today she saw the Brazilian Cherry bowl on the lathe and wanted to take it home even though it's not finished. Maybe one day I'll be able to keep something for myself. :D

I'm with you there Dusty B,
I don't know why but every visit is a minimum $200 whatever I go for,
I dread ordering stuff cause I know when I go and collect it all the orphan wood is put out on display.
Desparately pleading "Buy me ...Buy me"

Thet really do know how to turn a trick at my local Woodcraft.

Cheers and condolences

Sonny,

It is all your
Fault.

You posted a very
Wide link. They
don't wrap.

To place a link and
not have that happen
Put [] around link:www.url.someting|what_you_want_to_Call_it

For example a long link would be
[link:shop.woodcraft.com/woodcraft/assets/html/Nova3000.asp?mscssid=DFJ2077NAM2T8KCFAQN435KMXFXE4 801&gift=&giftID=&source=novadvr|lathe]

You guys remind me of my first ex-wife.
But I still love you's in spite of it.
Her, the world could do without.

IT'S MY FAULT LIMEY! I TRIED TO MAKE IT EASY FOR DICK AND ANYBODY ELSE. I SCREWED IT UP BECAUSE I DIDN'T BRACKET THE LINK. [DIDN'T KNOW!]
SCREW SEARS AND THEIR DAMN LONG A$$ED LINKS.
I'M SORRY YOU HAVE TO SCROLL YOUR WIDDLE MOUSE BALLS OFF FOLKS.

There I feel much better now. :7

Forget it, look in the damn yellow pages.
I'm going back to bed. I'm too dumb for this and I suppose that's my fault too. :P

Ok... we gotta get ya on the right track so Limey (limeballs???...whew... scrary...) ain't got nuttin to bag on ya... You must be doin ok if that's all the ammo he's got though... }>

OK... Posting a link.

Remember, ya gotta replace the < and the > thingies with a square bracket thingy... and you can't use any "HTTP//" things either...the URL needs to start with only "WWW". The divider between the link and what actually appears on the screen is a | thingie... it's right above the Enter key on my keyboard and is a SHIFT\ thingy...

So... here the deal...

<link:WWW.LongAssedSearsURLFromHell.com|This appears on the screen>

did that make any sense?? It's easier sometimes to just use "Reply with Quote" and look at what the poster used....

Sonny Edmonds
04-17-2002, 12:07 PM
That DOES help! I did do the reply with quotie thing with Lou's post,
But dumb me STILL couldn't get it right (nor left needer).
I couldn't find the | thingy. But nowz I noze where she be.

Of course I'll forget all this by the time I wanna use it.
Maybe iffen I copy, paste and email to the dummy at home (me, myself, and eye)
I can paste it on the moniker to remind my dumb a$$ how to did it.
Thanks! :)
I don't think there's a Woodcrappers Store out here.
Betty sez I fart sawdust sometimes though.
I thought it was goin down the belt line, but she thinks otherwise.
Since she does the laundry, I trust her judgement on this. :o
