Off to Betty's God Mothers this weekend.
Well, amoungst other things we went over to her boyfriends home. Well Merle does a bit of woodworking as well.
So next time we are up (in July) he has a beam of redwood for me that is 6"w x 14"t x about 6' long. He showed me some of the pieces he had from it that had been resawn and it's real pretty heartwood redwood.
It came from a beam from an old bridge.
He has some popular wood he wants me to have as well for turning.
Merle has a shop full of equipment, and a lathe he said he hasn't used in probably 18 years.
He has the tinyest Jointer I ever saw. A 4" cast iron jointer. (And a couple of other 6" jointers.) But that 4" is just the cutest little thing!
So the next trip will be in the truck. He's got some really interesting pieces in his firewood pile, as well.
He sawed and milled out his own paneling in his home and draw knifed the beams to give it a hunting lodge feel.
I'm looking forward to getting to know him much better. I want to hear the story behind the 7 x 6 set of elk antlers and the rest of the trophies he has as well in his home.
Visiting all the family is fun, but on this voyage I think I found a new friend as well.
:D
