Dick,
Remember you are talking to someone who has both the X and Y chromosones on board. It refers to a specific type of spindle mounting that the lathe has. It looks like a big ol' hole to me and the chuck I got John (for $200 used) fits into it. It is just for the metalworking industry and I don't think is very common at this point in time, judging from the length of time it took me to locate a chuck that would accept that. Remember, this lathe was built in the mid 80's. I am sure they have come up with other better stuff by now but hey, that's what I got. And no cellphone either, too cheap...
