Here I am, your worst nightmare, a new member of this forum with my first question. Even worse, I'm very green when it comes to woodturning but I love to work on my lathe more than any other tool in my shop.

However, I have a question for all the seasoned veterans out there. I want to know how the spiral effect is created on turned wood. This effect usually depicts beads that circle the turned wood like a candy cane. How do they do that?

Also, how to they cut beads that run parallel with the turned wood?

I appreciate your comments.

There are a few ways to go. The most versatile would be an ornamental turning machine. These can be very pricey and/or complicated. I saw two demos recently on the legacy machine, it uses a router and some mechanical gears to drive the router at a rate and turn the piece at another. Pretty slick operation. Another way to go would be to turn it and then go through either some drilling and carving or straight carving. There was a good article on this method a month or two ago in a woodworking magazine, I think it was either wood or American woodworker, but it could have been another one. A few hints to get you a little bit along the way. This one is pretty hard to do in words, but in person it is really simple, but it does take a lot of time.

Best Regards,

Bill
