Deep scratch in BRAND NEW Broyhill dining table. :-( Doesn't appear to be solid top, but a veneer of some sort. Can it be repaired or are we looking at keeping it covered forever?

Take it back and lie like Hell. Tell them it showed up that way.
LOL
Seriously, you need Lou or Glens help on this one.

It is very hard to give you advice without seeing the scratch. But from what you have said it goes all the way through the veneer. You have not said what type of wood, or finish the table has. But, almost all of these things can be repaired. You might start by contacting a local antique dealer and find a local restorer. If they don't do the work they could at least give you the advice of an onsite inspection.

It sounds like a pretty deep scratch if you can see the substrata, and if you're in the doghouse , it must have been your fault, eh? Problem with repairs is that unless the scratch is along the grain , it's always going to be visible, not to mention the refinishing. Sounds like your only way out is to strip the finish from the top and re veneer the top , then refinish. You've just discovered one of the main drawbacks to veneered furniture, especially tabletops.
