I want to use my Dremmel to carve a Luther Rose emblem on birch. How can I get the background smooth? This will be about a 3" to 4" round. I have carved carousel horses (4" tall) with this but had the same problem of smoothing the small areas. :+

I can sugest a couple of things. First, try to use the biggest radius cutter that will work in the area. This and a very light touch
will minimize the depth of the roughness. Also, "crossing " the surface with the cutter will help even out the "ripple". You can also use some of the various grinding stones to smooth the background.
Another trick is to use fingernail emery boards as sanding blocks. They can be cut with a small snip or scissor to shapes that fit in small spaces. Other things that work are "scotch brite" pads (available in different grits) and small flap wheels for the dremel tool. You sorta have to pick what works in a given space.
Hope this is of some help.
