That other post brought up a question. I have a weight room in my unfinished basement and I want that "industry" look when I finish the walls, so I am thinking of painting the ceiling (underside of the main floor) joists, hangers, gas pipes, copper water pipes (no apparent sweating).

Same question, what are the pitfalls of painting the gas and water lines will primer on those be enough, special paint, suggestions against to avoid corosion, etc?

Thanks folks!

Same answer as the original. For UNHEATED fixtures, metal primer, then regular house paint. If there's a lot of condensation, on the pipes, maybe a Rustoleum-type paint would be better. For heated pipes, you can buy heat resistant paint. I believe its rated for up to about 1200 degrees. On furnace and heater grills, it works great.

One thing special. Sometimes copper doesn't take paint very well. You'd maybe have best luck if you precoated the copper with shellac. Won't be a great idea for hot water pipes, but for your cold supply it should be fine. For your hot-water copper pipes, you'd probably do best with a high-zinc-content primer.
