View Full Version : Garbage Disposal - hot or cold?

Okay, my wife and I are having a debate, and I figured someone on here would know. We are debating running the garbage disposal either with hot or cold water. I can see pros and cons of both. What is the right, if there is one, answer?

What do the instructions say? Any that I've seen say to use cold water....

Why use water you have to pay to heat just to run the disposal? Thats my take. Just don't throw grease down the thing and you will be ok.

Agree with Dano---you'll likely find the best advice through the mfg. Have heard "household tips" in both directions---main issue being with cooking grease or fat, as to congile or not, etc. Only can add ice cubes help to clean the blades, when tossed in. :D

I have seen the same advice as Dano; cold water. If there is any grease going down, the cold water sets it and allows it to be ground up. Hot water keeps it liquid until it gets further into the pipes and then sets up there, eventually leading to a clogged drain.
The only time I have seen hot water recommended for a garbage disposal is when you are cleaning it; usually with a cleaning product that is activated by the hot water.

I'll add my voice to the cold-water party.
Unless you're rural, that is. If you're rural, take the darned thing out altogether. There's always a band of critters around that'll be happy to eat anything you'd have otherwise put down the disposal.

I don't care WHAT brand OR the temprature of the water. Garbage Disposals are a PROBLEM, waiting to happen. I personally, would NOT install one. A garbage can and/or compost pile is a lot easier, with NO headaches, compared to a disposal.

Appreciate everyone's responses. I am not rural, and the city sewer system seems just fine. I understand some people don't care for them; myself, have always had them with no problems, and love em'. But, will use cold from now on. Guess, the wife was right. She got excited when she saw a couple of the postings all leaning her way...Thanks again!
