It looks like a mud dauber's nest. Those little critters are along the lines of a wasp. I can never tell the difference between the two, cuz if it got a stinger I ain't staying around to find out what it is. But as for nests, I believe wasps tend to make a sort of honeycomb shaped nest, while mud daubers make the long mud nest like in our pic.

Right on, PP. It is indeed a mud dauber's nest. Or dirt dobber as we call them in E. TX. They will usually be full of spiders inside. Interestingly enough, the spiders are not dead, but are more like paralyzed/catatonic from the dauber's sting.
The mud dauber is not aggressive like a wasp. The worst thing I've found about them is that they will plug up virtually any small opening they find. If you have any disconnected air hoses, propane hoses or fittings, be sure and put a cap on the end or you will likely find a mud ball inside.

Cody,
The reason you call them dirt daubers in the Lone Star State is because you don't have enough moisture down there for them little critter to make mud. They just have to settle for dirt. :P

If you had my wife and daughter around, you SURE wouldn't be keeping them around!! If it has wings and stings, they consider one mile a safe distance.

We got 'em here in not-so-east Texas (Houston), and we call 'em mud dawbers too. But then again we get rain to the tune of 8 inches an hour sometimes.
The worst thing I've found with these things is that the nest gradually turns to the consistancy of high-grade runway concrete. Virtually impregnable to anything less than a hammer and chisel!
