WELCOME TO THE FORUM

Cabinet looks good. Proportions worked out great. The finish looks good even with the problems you had. I know what you mean about spraying shellac. I think what happens, it seems to coagulate in the gun after spraying a short while. Other than thinning with denatured alcohol, there's not much available like retarders, to keep it from happening. I had to ultimately finish the shellac with sanding and rubbing out. Try water base polyurethane, pretty easy to spray, not toxic, finishes nice.

Thanks for the welcome - however I was previously woodnewbie - Marc was kind enough to let me setup a new name.

This is an entertainment armoir I build. I made some modifications to the plans I purchased. The original plans used simple butt joints; I used dados, and the original plans had faux raised panels. I used a panel raising set to build this.

I had several problems because the plywood I purchased (cheap) was somewhat warped, and because I was already outspending what my wife wanted me to on the project I kind of "forced" the project to work.

Most difficult actually turned out to be the finish. I was trying to match our bedroom set, so I used amber colored shellac which seemed right when brushed with several coats on a test piece. In reality, when I sprayed the shellac on, I used several coats, and had a nice orange finish that was not acceptable. So, I got some garnet shellac flakes and brown dye, and darkened it up. The real problem was my sprayer started doing wierd things, and I ended up with what looked to me to be a horribly mottled finish (spatters of darker spots) in the sunlight (I had to finish it outdoors). In the bedroom, however, it looks much better and since my wife is happy - that makes me happy too; although I always think about what it looks like in direct sunlight.
