View Full Version : Timing Is Everything!!

My timing stinks! Just when the balance in my tool account is lower than low, and the tree contractor charged us double what he quoted for taking a tree down (taught me to get a written bid from now on), this comes along:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=42360&item=4314857997&rd=1

And it's within driving distance!!! Of course, I haven't looked to see what it's actually worth, and other chances will come along. But it's still frustrating!

Edit: Just checked the Tool Crib catalog and it retails for $550.

PP,

That is the same jointer I have. Except mine is 1 hp and not a gold series. I don't know the difference between gold and not gold. I do know that is a nice jointer. I hope you can find a way. Maybe sell the tree.

Monty,

I promised Mary that nothing would go on credit unless is was an emergency item for the house. We're already charged to the hilt, and medical bills are rising in spite of good insurance.

Now we have one medical bill that the insurance company is disputing, and the doctor's office is demanding immediate payment. After telling us that we could just make payments while we work this out with the insurance company, yesterday we received a bill warning us that it is the final bill before it goes to a collection agency.

The billing clerk is on vacation until Tuesday, so we don't know what is happening, but I'm about to blow a gasket. The insurance company says the coding is wrong, and the billing clerk says that they code it as the doctor gives it to them and won't change it. I've got one more piece of paperwork coming in, then our daughter is going to get into the fray. This is one of the areas she is very familiar with from her work at the hospital. She has the resources at her disposal that should help us resolve this quickly, once I can get the rest of the paperwork.

Maybe this just isn't time for my jointer. Others will come along, maybe even a better deal.

If it makes you feel better it isn't going to sell that low. With 2 days left I bet the price shoots up in the last 4 or 5 hours to $350 or so.

And check your local classifieds... Saw a Ridgid jointer for $200 in there this week, unfortunately, already sold.

From my limited understanding of law, I was always told that as long as an agency that is owed money cashes your checks, they cannot turn you into a credit collection agency. They can refer the account to their own collection department, but not an outside vendor.

Now that is just hearsay, but we have at least one lawyer on the forum that may be able to clarify the issue.

Hey, I know that feeling. Got rid of all my CC's and am now paying them off. Don't plan on getting any more.

Know about the disputes with Dr's and insurance companies too. Insurance
can deny a claim for any number of reasons but you or I can't. I just received a bill from a specialest for a visit over a year ago. Figure if they waited this long to bill me they can take small payments.

I practically live in the classified ads. Plus I watch the auction posters. Something will come along.

It's already up at $260 with 23 bids and almost 500 views, the odd thing is if this cost $500 brand new with a warrantee just 2 years ago why would anyone pay even $260 for a USED one with NO warrantee that is sight unseen that you have no idea how it's been treated and for which you will have a much more difficult time arranging shipping than buying from say Amazon or a tool outlet.
I see it as buying someone elses' possible headache for newrly the cost of a brand new machine. Brand new can be had now for $549 with a warrantee;

JET 708457K / JJ-6CSX 6" Woodworking Jointer
Tools & Hardware

our price: US$549.99

Editorial Review

When it comes to jointers, there aren't a lot of differences among the leaders in the market. Like other manufacturers, Jet uses heavy-duty cast iron in the fence, jointer base, and infeed/outfeed tables and offers a three-blade drum and built-in 4-inch dust port. Their design, however, features a couple of innovations that changed our "jointers are jointers" mindset. While the infeed tables in other models can only be raised or lowered with a rod or lever system, this machine's design allows you to adjust both of the feed tables by rotating smooth, industrial-style hand wheels.

This feature lends itself to easier tapers and gives you more control when you need to take off precise measurements, like 1/64 of an inch, a setting that can frustrate woodworkers lifting the arms up or down on other machines. The fence glides extremely smoothly throughout its range of motion and tilts both ways, but, where other brands offer fixed stops only at 45 and 90 degrees, Jet's jointer adjusts to quickly reproduce multiple cuts at any angle you find necessary.

Driven by a 4,850 rpm, 1-horsepower induction motor completely encased in a welded steel stand, this jointer comes prewired for 115-volt outlets and can be converted to run off 230-volt sources. As a final touch, Jet designed the industrial start switch with holes behind the button for locking with a readily available Master Lock to keep coworkers or family members safe from accidental injury.

Features
* 1 hp, single-phase, 115/230-volt motor
* 46-inch cast-iron bed with precision-machined finish ensures accuracy
* Fence tilt two ways and features 90- and 45-degree positive stops
* Easy-to-use handwheels accurately adjust the infeed and outfeed tables
* Built-in ledge for cutting rabbet

No, the jokes are great. The problem is that the forum doesn't have a built-in rim shot I can add to them. :P

If timing is every ting den my name is Nadda. Just when LadyRider OKs my plan to build a covered patio and my shop, my company puts itself up for sale. Last time dey did that we wound up with a 65% cut on the work force. My plan is off for de time being. Plan for Oneida or WoodSucker with fixed piping becomes HarborFreight/Grizzly with flex hose.

CajunRider,

Hope you make the cut. Or should that be, "Hope you don't make the cut"? In any case, I hope and pray that you keep you job when the ax falls.

I know that when the company I worked for had two explosions and two buy-outs, a lot of jobs were cut. Finally, they just closed up shop and went home.

One thing that troubles me in our church body is that even though we have hundreds of congregations looking for a pastor, we have hundreds of pastors who can't get a call. Of course, some of it is problems with the pastor, but some of the pastors waiting for a church are excellent pastors. Well, I guess last year I gave one more place for a new pastor to come into.

Your timing and your sense of humor are greatly appreciated Pastor Paul. Good luck on finding a jointer at a decent price.

Paul,

I would not feel too bad. Watch it, I bet it sells for more that you can get a new one retail! I solf a BT-3000 for $30 more than I paid for it on a auction I opened for $1!

Blessings,

Randall,

It's now on special for about $530. The more I look at that Jet, the more I am impressed with it. That's one worth waiting for until I can buy new and get the warranty.

I can get a 6" Delta for $200 new, but it didn't mention a tilting fence, or the rabbet ledge. Those are two features I believe are important. If I remember correctly, it also had a shorter bed than the Jet.

It's going to be a while before I can order the Jet, but I'm not totally brain dead yet, though some dealer must think I am. :) Figure this one out:

I can buy the Jet from Amazon.com for $550, get $25 off and free shipping, for a total of $525. Or I can order the same jointer from one of their 3rd party dealers right here in Missouri, pay $700, plus almost $135 for shipping, for a grand total of $835. And let's not forget that, since the dealer is here in Missouri, I'd pay roughly $50 in sales tax. So now I can get it for a mere $885.

Let's see now! Would I rather pay $525, or $885, for the same machine? If there's a math whiz on the forum, could you help me figure this one out? :)
