I thought i kanew what this was until I read todays 'Tip" now I'm confused.....can someone explain it differently or better yet draw me a picture...thanks

Wood grows in circles, right?

Ok, If you start slicing horizontally down from the top you'll have "plain sawn". The slab of wood is tangential to the center of the tree.

When you get down to the diameter the boards to the left and right of the center point are quartersawn.
