what type of stain should I use on a wooden basket made out of Pine?

Well the biggest question is: what color do you want it to be? With a light colored wood like pine you could make it as dark or light as you like. Be aware that pine is a wood that isn't really the best for staining so you may want to use wood conditioner on it first.
Hope this helps a little.
what is a wood conditioner?

Check this link if you're interested in wood conditioner.
It's a link for the product description of Minwax's wood conditioner. It gives a pretty good explination of what it does and why and how you should use it.

I would just like to add that the gel stains made by minwax work excellent on pine. The don't blotch up like the regular oil base stains. Any time I make anything from pine I only use the gel stains.

Totally agree with gel stains for pine. Works well for me :-)
