I'm a beginning woodworker looking to buy my first router. I have already decided to go with the Porter Cable 1&1/2 H.P., 10amp, fixed base router(690). But I am unsure of which handle option is the best.

I like the D-handle option (691), its safe and easy to handle. However, I'm afraid that without a handle on the opposite side, it could make the router "tipsy", when trying to balance the base on a thin surface. If anyone has experience with this router base, I would like to know if they have this problem.

The standard 690 model, with opposing knob handles, seems easier to balance, as I can grip it on both sides, and is $30 cheaper, but seems unsafe. Anyone's thoughts or experience would be a great help

I never used a D handle, but I feel opposing handles are just as safe, if you are paying attention. Now, here is a problem I just ran into. I have some routing to do and it requires a large bit. I was told that my 1 1/2 hp router won't have enough guts and I should get a 3 hp or larger. So maybe you should think about a larger hp router. I decided on a Freud 3 1/4 plunge router. It can plunge, be set at one depth, and will also fit in a table. Just something I thought I should pass on. Good Luck.

I have two PC routers the 690 series with a D handle and the large unit with the standard handels. I don't notice much difference between them from the handle stand point. The large unit is much heavier and a bit more difficult to use on a narrow edge, you just have to plan ahead.

By the way. I have used them pretty much for the same applications with diffent bits loaded in each so I don't have to change each time. I have not noticed the need for the larger pouer yet. But, I have a shapper for raising pannels and really big jobs.

Good luck

I have 2 d handle routers and highly recommend them. The PC 690 D handle does have a second handle. It is the same as the handles on the regular 690. The big advantage I find is control. A D handle is easier to control. Also the switch is located in the handle making it a little easier to turn the machine off.
