I am looking at buying a new general use vise, and want a pretty hefty one. Not being able to find reviews, or look at samples, I have seen pictutes and descriptions only. Seeing only marginal differences in prices of the larger models over those just a little smaller, I think I am basically considering the Record 53EXXX ($130) and the Jorgenson 41012 ($120). I think they have comparable features, with the Record having a wider opening and the Jorgenson having a wooden handle. The Record is also about 5 pounds heavier. Any thoughts on features, or experience with these or other models. Should I consider others. Where should look to purchase?

Just a note. If your looking at "true" wood vises(the ones that mount under the bench), make sure to get one with a lift leg for top of bench work. The advantage is that you are limited only by the size of the bench as to how big of a piece you can clamp down. Thought I'd throw that in.

Check out the quick release woodworkers vise at Harborfreight
http://www.harborfreight.com. The 9" jaw version costs about $35. I've been using it for several years and have no complaints. It is comparable in quality to the Pony or Jorgensen version.
