LAST EDITED ON Jan-08-01 AT 09:43PM (CDT)[p]Incra makes a line of precision rules and marking tools that are nothing short of outstanding.

You have to supply your own .5mm mechanical pencil, but the rules are precision cut with slots and holes every 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, .010 and .5mm All you have to do is put the guide along the edge, the tip of the pencil in the right hole and slide it along for a perfect and precise mark.

They have a variety of configurations from 3" to 24" and specialty markers like the 1/16" grid and the 90° corner. Visit http://www.woodpeck.com/rule.html or any good WW'ing store.

...

Just visited their page and they're having a 1/3 off sale!

For laying out joints, such as dovetails, I would suggest the following:
Square
Sliding T-Bevel
Scratch awl (made very sharp for scribing lines)
Marking guage
Steel rule
As with any tool, buy the best quality you can afford. If you are a beginner and don't already have one, a good book on marking out and cutting joinery is also a worthwhile investment.
