Where is the Wood?
Ok I finally got my 6" planer and 14" Bandsaw and I'm ready to buy some wood rough that does not come S4S from the big box stores...
The question is : I'd be much happer if I could "hold" the wood before purchase.
Does anyone know of a place to buy rough Oak & Cherry within 60 Miles of Detroit, MI?

RE: Where is the Wood?
I used to purchase from "Warrington Lumber". Don't even know if the place is still in business. I moved from the area in 1979!

Gerry
Hi and welcome to the forum. I’m on the other side of the state in Allegan County so I don’t know where to look over there.
Try http://www.woodfinder.net .

RE: Where is the Wood?
It might be a bit of a drive, but we've got Hearne's hardwoods in Oxfiord, PA (near lancaster).

Hope this helps.

RE: Where is the Wood?
Gary,
As you know, it's been awhile since I moved out here from Michigan; do they still give out phone books back there? Too bad there's a 60 mile limit, Johnson's in Charlotte is worth the drive from Marquette, IMHO.

RE: Where is the Wood?
Dano,
We get two books around here. The Yellow Pages and “the other book”. Both of them have some listings.
I was going to suggest Johnson’s but he put the 60-mile limit. It was the best 200 mile trip I ever made though so again, thanks for recommending them to me.

RE: Where is the Wood?
You might check this place out. I think it's close to Detroit. I've bought some wood from them before, it was pretty good.

RE: Where is the Wood?
Gerry: I buy rough-cut, air-dried hardwood in the Swartz Creek area just west of Flint. I75 North of you to I69 West. Exit at Miller Rd. and continue west through Swartz Creek. You will find Broad Blade Farms on the right (north) side of the road. Usually $1.50 per board foot but have always found him willing to deal.

RE: Where is the Wood?
If your goin to Lancaster, go to Groff & Groff in Tanglewood, below the Buck. They let you do whatever you want, within reason. Flip it ,fondle it, whatever trips your trigger. Nice wood too. 4/4 to 16/4.
And right across from the Buck is Snady Pond Hardwoods. They specialize in figured wood. Like bigleaf maple, birdseye, and tiger.
Sells scraps for 50 cents a pound. nice for turnings.
Just a thought.
Later,
W
