If you want to cut a 2"x12" with a 12" CMS in one pass it is possible. I never said it was easy! The front edge of wider material is raised above the table.

For cutting framing material, such as floor & ceiling joist, top & bottom wall plates. Working off a bundle of lumber or a number of pieces set on saw horses, a skil saw & framing square will out cut a miter saw or radial arm saw on a job site. The less you handle the material the better off you are. With a few years experience & a few thousand board feet of lumber, you'll be able to cut a 2"x4" square with out a framing square. Don't forget, I come from the old school.

Arcticfox46 - I've been looking into the same thing. It seems odd to me that both the 10" and 12" SCMS seem to have the same "width" capacities - 12". It looks like the 12" will give you a little more "height" capacity on the table.

I would think the "soft start" feature would be nice on any mitre saw. My current saw does not have this, and at times can move the piece I am cutting when the blade starts. The Hitachi has that feature advertised, not sure about the others. The Bosch is really a sweet looking saw.

Let us know if you find something really significant between 10" and 12" SCMS.

By the way, there is an ebay remfg reseller called Diamond Drilling and Supply. I have bought Hitachi from them numerous times, all good experiences for me at good discount from retail - FWIW.

I think my FIL can cut a board by hand straighter than I can with a circular saw and a square. Of course, he's been doing carpentry work almost as long as I've been on this earth.

Well,

I ordered the Delta 12" CMS. I am pretty sure it will work OK for my needs. If it is a real dog I will just sell it.

I really don't have much money to work with. Like I said I had $100 put aside and I have some money from EBAY sales, so I don't have to take any money from the home budget.

Any way, it has already been shipped and is on its way. Good thing too, I am getting calls for jobs. Funny, how you get REAL busy REAL fast. Rags to riches I guess. I just hope I can keep up with the work. I have four jobs now! Spiral stairs with a second floor deck - a shed - a set of deck stairs - and some general handyman work

Sounds like you are on your way, with jobs lined up already. Congratulations, and I hope your business continues to grow and provide a comfortable living!! I know that when I ran a part-time handyman business back in Iowa, I loved it more than my full-time job.

BTW - I've got 24' of soffit that need to be removed and replaced. What do you charge for a small job in Missouri? :)

I have found that after much use, the DeWalt tends to "loosen up" the Bosch has too many handles, dials, and adjusting parts, I wish that Porter Cable made a 12" slider (I have the 12" cms and it is awesome) and I have also been told that the Makita 12in slider is the best of the bunch, and like the Hitachi, the sliders are kept free from debris by going under the table instead of ouside like the DeWalt, Rigid, Bosch, and others.
