Electric hand planer good for edge joining?

Im trying to stay away from buying a jointer and I was wondering if I could use an electric hand planer instead?

Also, any info on which to buy would be helpful.

    Thanks

No, Mike - please don't. It won't. If there were a means of holding it stable enough, PERHAPS - PERHAPS... but they're also not very accurate for what you want to do and they're AWFULLY short.

They're best for projects like planing rafters or floor joists to level up a large surface, that kind of thing. For THAT purpose, they're unmatched.

It'd be possible, I suppose, to BUILD a jointer AROUND one... but not an easy task.

If budget's a serious concern, consider a good ol' hand-powered jointer plane... or at LEAST a jack plane. That'll give ya something to sharpen, too... :)

Thanks so much. I had a feeling but I figured I would ask. I guess I just have to fork over the $400.

    Thanks again
