    Used Delta 12" Planer

I found a 12" Delta Planer for sale for $90. I haven't seen it cause it's on another island but he said it's about 8 yrs old and in good condition. It comes with an extra set of reversible blades and regular blades as well. What do you guys thing about this deal? Is the planer too old to buy?

That price doesn't seem too bad if it's in good running condition if it'll meet your needs....$75 would be better. Is it a model 22-540? That's known to be a workhorse, although it has no cutterhead lock so you'll get a bit of snipe on each end fairly regularly. Check if it has a dust collection chute too....planers are the absolute worst for saw dust....they're dust spitting monsters.

If the motor works and all the parts are there it's a good price. He might be up for negotiation. I've always had this theory to not get into a rush in fear of making a mistake, but jump all over a good deal.

It might be worth $90 if the blades are still good; if not, you might want to haggle it down some. I have a 22-540 - it's an OK workhorse. Certainly has plenty of power. However, it will snipe every board (no cutterhead lock), and the feed rollers don't provide much traction, especially once you've made a couple passes and the board is smooth. I find myself having to push the board in, something I'm not comfortable doing. But I keep the planer, as it has sentimental value. (I really should consider stepping up to a better planer.)

If the feed rollers give you the same traction problems, apply a little automotive fan belt dressing from time to time.

Make sure you have a good set of hearing protectors. This machine is incredibly loud.

    Cheers,

    Kevin

I'm not sure what model it is. Didn't think to ask that. But he said he made a 4" dust chute for it that works pretty good. I would try haggling the price down some, but this is Hawaii and so you have to include mark-up. I think it should meet my needs for now until I can afford a better one. From what you guys said, it doesn't seem like a bad deal or a bad planer. More than likely I'll end up getting it because it's better than what I have now, which is nothing.

I had a 22-540 for years and years...

    It's a workhorse all right...

You'll need to apply a thread lock to the nut on the shaft that holds the cutter head on... they had a recall or notice on that, and mine came loose a couple of times... easy fix though...

This is about 4 or 5 shops ago... the planer is there on the right...

.... and here is what planing pine without a properly working dust collector will create .... :)

    I remember that plug.
    Wet (green) cypress wasn't it?
Something that was too wet still.

    Or was that Guacamole?
    Hence, Holy Guacamole! :7

All things cornsidered, that is probably a good deal over there.
It isn't going to do your native Koa any justice, but it will be better than nothin, like you said.

Hey Marc, did you ever rig up a dust collector for that Delta 22-540 planer? If you did, I sure would like to see some pictures or something that explaining how you went about it. I just got done looking at the planer and it looks like I'll need to rig something up if I don't want chips and dust all over the place. I'm sure I can figure something out on my own, but if you already did that, it would save me a lot of time trying to figure it out on my own.

For that matter, does or did anyone else have this planer and rigged up a dust collection set-up for it?

Sorry Sonny, it was supposed to go under Marc's post.

Delta sells the sheet metal attachment for the planer.
