Got my new planer!!!! Pics and results added.
Well my Grizzly G0453 planer last week. It arrived with no damage at all. UPS freight was able to back up to my garage and use the lift gate service I ordered to set it right on the garage floor. I give the driver creadit that he was very helpfull in unloading it.
I ordered the byrd head to install immidiately. Installing this was much more of a challange than I expected. I had to remove and disassemble the gearbox to change out the head. Then I had allot of trouble removing the cutterhead from the bearing in the gearbox. I almost had to take it to a press to remove it (1 1/2 hour drive one way to my dad's press). After hours of fighting it it finnally came loose. I put the byrd head in the frezzer for a few hours to shrink it to make assembly easier. Head went together much easier than it came appart.
I was able to try it out breifly last night. It cuts great. The only thing is that it left quite a bit of shavings on the board. I haven't had the chance to see if I can improve that yet.
Sorry, no pics yet. I'm currently sitting in Laguardia airport so there is no chance that I can get any pics any time soon.

By "shavings", do you mean fuzzy tearout on the surface? You might try reversing the board so it cuts the other direction. Some wood is terribly difficult to plane smoothly, too - what kind of wood was it?

And there's something wrong with that? Heck, how you supposed to know how it is supposed to work if you don't take it apart before stuff breaks so you know how it is supposed to look? :)
We'll be waiting on a full review so the rest of us will know whether to start saving our nickels and dimes to get one.

Nice planer, sure would look good sitting in my shop. The handle on my Griz jointer rattles, I put on ear muffs and ignore it.
