Gotta go SPEND some money -- DONE

My family just gave me a $215 Amazon.com gift certificate.

So -- I gotta go spend it.

Here are a few things I am thinking of.

    Drill Doctor 750 or 500
I actually don't care about the ability of custom drill point angles - which is the biggie special feature on the 750. BUT - I do like that is can scarpen up to 3/4 without buying the adapter. I really could use a drill sharpener. For all intents and purposes, I beleive the 500 and the 750 are about the same

    http://www.drilldoctor.com/pilot.asp?pg=compare-models

The link is for the comparison only

    Price comparison wise
    D500 machine-3/4 adapter-extra wheel = about 160
d750 machine and extra wheel == about 160

So price wise it's a no brainer

BUT -- does anyone have one - do you like it - do you use it?

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

    Grizly slow speed wet grinder

    http://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-T10010...d=R8K6C5BK5JZQ

REALLY - I am most interested in being able to sharpen my jointer knives and my planer knives - not sure this is even going to do that for me - yes I could get the accessories - but??

I am quite OK with the scary sharp for plane blades and chisels. I am also skilled enough that I can use a bench grinder for lathe tools and other stuff.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

    Work Sharp grinder

again - same comments as the Griz slow grinder

RE: Gotta go SPEND some money

    Leo,

I have a drill doctor (the lesser of the two I believe) and I like it, haven't had a ton of use on it though. I didn't really have that many dull bits, in fact - it was more of a "trying this thing out" kinda deal. It worked well enough for me to know - with a little practice - I would be getting some really good results.

Slow speed grinder or the Work Sharp..... I don't know - the Work Sharp has ALWAYS appealed to me.... why? Because I think it actually works - I really honestly believe that it works as advertised.... not many TV ads can I say that about.

Hmmmm.... $215 huh? Nothing else you've been holding out on?

Honestly - I think the slow speed grinder would be the way to go, I think if sharpening planer and jointer knives is what you fancy - that is the way to go.

Now - do they have other slow speed grinders on Amazon that are perhaps either A) a little nicer than the Grizz or B) have a better "accessories system" than the Grizz?

Just trying to think of some other options....

    hmm..... :)

Well - I would like a full cabinet saw - but $215 is not even close.

    Maybe a rabit plane?

I wood like a big thick slab of natural edge cherry cut out of a tree on about a 45 degree angle so I could make a coffee table.

There are a few small things, but not really much.

I really could use the drill sharpener.

I know Sonny has a Drill Doctor... and knowing him, it's the 750 (or better). He's spoken very well about it.

Now... I don't like the look of the WorkSharp. Given what you know about precision grinding, would you really like to see a fine surface ground on the full face of a wheel? True, it gives you a completely flat grind instead of a hollow grind... but the grinding pattern is circular instead of linear. That means there are weak spots all along the edge.

The Griz Tormek-Lookalike, with the right jig & wheels, should be a fine grinder for jointer & planer knives. It may tax your patience a little, since it'll work very slowly, but it should do the job and give you a fine polished bevel.

Yeah - I am a bit reluctant about the grinders.

My fear - is getting a 12-1/2 long planer knife - "straight". That would be pretty important. If I "really" wanted to - I could bring them into work.

I am really leaning toward the Drill Doctor. That is my biggest bottleneck - sharpening bits. That really should be done on a drill sharpening machine.

I have been looking at the Drill Doctor for a few years now, and I do have a few drills that need sharpening.

That John Adams mini series was somethin' else! It's well-made stuff like that which may turn me into a history buff one day :P

Good on the DD, leo. I have a worksharp and I have yet to even pull it out of the box. It's been two years ... but that's not the fault of the machine, i guess. I rebuilt one shop, bought a house, rebuilt the new shop, built a shed and moved a back door in that time ... not a lot of real woodworking goin on this place unfortunately. But! That's all about to change very soon - I'm getting the shop back one day at a time and I'll be able to give ya a good review of the WS hopefully before ya reach the decision point again :)

You'd need to add the jig for jointer and planer blades for the Griz which is another $160 on top of the price of the machine.
