Varnish
Quik tip
Varnish users...purchase some cheap paint filters to strain your
varninsh before AND after use. I've also used panthose to strain
laquer. This to keep out contaminates.
I was reminded of this browesing the last issue of American Woodworker...a favorite.

RE: Varnish
Sand off the plastic finish and refinish it with something that can be repaired more easily. I would recomend danish oil. Under the same conditions you could have just wiped on a new coat of oil and be done with it.
If the scratches are into the raw wood you have a real problem cat.

RE: Varnish
Peter,
I've seen a pick up in town with a licence plate frame that says, "Cats flatened while you wait." ;)

RE: Varnish
If not Danish oil, I'd recommend fabulon floor finish (not urethane).
