RE: paraffin?
Boris,
You could try the grocery store in the section where they sell canning supplies.
HOWEVER, I would recommend using paste wax for the sole of the plane.

RE: paraffin?
For lubricating the base of a hand plane etc you can use a standard candle..no need for perfumed ones ...:) I find it more convenient than the unweildy blocks of canning wax. Just draw a few squigles on the base and hang on to the tote..it'll fly over the wood slicker than "snot on a doorknob" to quote DickLaxt.
I've not found it to cause any finishing problems in the 30 years I've been doing it this way...or the thousands of apprentices before me.... so I cannot comment on Rich's recommendation..It wouldn't hurt to use paste wax but it seems far quicker to just squiggle on the bottom with a candle and nothing more.
Incidentally it's extremely beneficial to do the same on a handsaw blade.

Thanks. Stupid of me, but it never came to my mind to use old good candle. XXI st century, age of electricity is to blame.
