    Compound miter settings for Crown

I'm in the final stretch on the bookshelf that I'm building, and all that's left is the trim - some of which is crown moulding. All I have to do is 2 outside 90's. Nothing complicated at all.

I have a compound miter saw, but I'm not sure of the settings that I should use for the crown that I have.

Is there a set formula for how to figure the angles out, or would I be better off putting together a fence that will hold it up in it's 'installed' position while I do a simple cut?

I'm sure you will get a ton of replies that will help you so let me throw this one in first. Aside from my own I have worked in two professional shops making furniture where I applied crown moulding two different ways. In the second shop my employer had purchased thousands of dollars worth of tools for a two man operation (???,) one of which was a compound miter saw. When it came time to put moulding on a piece my employer showed me how to set up the compound saw, pulling numbers out of somewhere, and eventually I got it done, not knowing how.

In reverse, the first shop I worked in, one of the best in the country at what they do, had only a power miter saw for moulding cutting. If we had a moulding to cut, even a complex cornice moulding, we cut it on this saw. If you hiold the moulding on the saw's table the same way it will be on the piece all you need cut is a 45. It would help if you make auxillarly tables to support the moulding.

You can make wedges that will fit the back or front of the moulding if you want to cut them as they would be when installed. If your clearance allows you can do it this way as long as the piece is supported. If you're cutting flat, with the top of the moulding against the fence, depending which side you're saving, Bevel left 33.85 deg., Miter right 31.62 deg. OR Bevel right 33.85 deg., Miter left 31.62 deg. These cuts are based on the standard angle set for crown moulding.
