    Sealing melamine edges

Doing a repair job on an under-sink pullout (drawer). The original is made of 3/4 melamine, wrapped with 1/4" oak ply (3" high) on both sides and back, and oak edge banding on the front. Problem is that sink leaked, and water made it's way to the edges of the melamine, which soaked it up like a sponge.
They want the same look, so I was wondering if using some kind of sealer on the edges prior to assembly would prevent this from happening again. Any ideas? Thanks for any input!
