    Use of pore filler

I should complete the coffee table I'm building for my daughter this weekend. However never having used ash before, does it require a pore filler, like oak does, before staining?

    RE: Use of pore filler

It's a much finer grain than Red Oak. Although I didn't finish that Ash corner cabinet I recently built, it sanded really smooth and did not require a filler, IMO. A wet sanding while finishing would probably create enough slurry to make it super slick.

    Ash is just like Oak.

You don't NEED to fill the pores unless you don't like the grainyness of the wood. The pore filler will fill the pores, as the name suggests. That will give you a smooth finish without the grainy feel.

Dano, has a recommendation for a pore filler - I have tried a water based product once, but have yet to do a project with it.

If you desire to fill the pores in Oak, you are gonna want to do the Ash also.

Ash is a really pretty wood. I almost like it better than Oak.

Can't wait to see the pics.

    RE: Use of pore filler

Thanks for the replies. I may get some and try it on a scrap and see what it looks like. Picts may be a few weeks yet. Hope to get it stained and polyed this weekend and then install the tile top next weekend.
