    It looks like these would hold some pretty big plants. It would be a good application for pocket hole screws or dowls for extra strength in addition to the glue. I'd use pocket screws since they are so easy to install.

    Planter box help

    I'm going to build a pair of these for mom. The only question I have is joinery, how should the 4 face frames be joined to each other, will glue suffice or do I need something more?

    That's a long grain to long grain glue-up so the bond will be stronger than the wood. But, for maximum strength, I would use a stub tenon and groove joint. It's easy to make on the tablesaw or on the router table and really strong. See the sketch below.
