Too Pooped to open a box...
We got home yesterday evening to a Woodcraft box on the porch after a 3 day run with the gang to Solvang and the Lompoc area.
I guess we had tooo much fun because we all arrived home to pooped to pop.
But tonight I reckon I'll be delving into the box of pen parts and all.
Betty saw all my pen blanks stacked up and ask what all those are for.
"Pens, I'm going to try making some pens on the lathe for gifts."
"Ohhhh, that ought to be nice," she sez.
So I'm about to give it a try. I can sure use some shop time.
10 cigar pen kits, with my maple blanks, now I'm really curious what's in that box. :)

Hey ole'buddy.............you are doing great in the pen business, how long does it take to complete one?
Watch out for that Super glue have some degluer within reach I glued my fingers together the other day......always have some degluer with in reach........heard a story about a guy who glued his hand to the lathe had to wait 6 hours til his wife came home because he couldn't reach the acetone.

RE: What's in the box...
Sonny,
Nice work. I still haven't tried any pens yet. Is there any chance on saving the upper one or is it committed and unsalvagable?
Best Regards,
Bill

How long....
....oh, I donno, about from here to there. :)
I haven't timed it and it is getting faster and faster. But I prepped the blanks last week.
So how long is a tough call. It takes longer to finish one than to do the actual cutting.
Assembly is a snap, 2-5 minutes tops.
Got to run off to work... :o

RE: What's in the box...
Hi Bill,
Well, yes and no. If I can get just the male threaded part that inserts into the barrel, and I get a disassembly tools set for 20 bucks, maybe.
But to me it would be a long shot.
Right now I'm out a kit at $4.67 plus my little wood blank and a little time.
I emailed Woodcraft about it and am waiting to see if they will send me a replacement kit. If so, no harm/no foul. I'll just make a new one. I can accept a manufacturing boo-boo.
The wood is just red oak, not some exotic or something that has a vast investment.
But I sure scrutinized the rest of the kits. 1 out of 10 ain't real bad. 10 out of 100 might piss me off though. And I'm too new at this to draw any conclusions about weather or not parts from a different supplier would interchange. I would dought it.
If I had a die, I could thread it in place, but I dought I could find something with such fine threads.
Easier to:
A. Make a new one. OR
B. Eat it and be more carefull to check all the parts prior to getting committed to an assembly.
Some of these I just pressed together using a small quick clamp with the pads removed as suggested by someone in another thread (forgive me for forgetting the name, Thank You for the tip!) And that works very well.
Troublesome joints went to my maple faced bench vice and got that tiny extra squash to set them home.
It's great sport for the little Midi. Instant gratification of completeing something quickly is right there as well. Plus I'm getting a good hang on using a skew chisel for shaping the bodies, then I sand them in to final shape.
I friction on the BLO thinned with turpintine, so it drys pretty fast and I can recoat if I desire.
Betty and I like the CA finish the best so far. It comes out hard and smooth, but not plastic like. :)

Well Dick, What they got was....
...another order for $114 worth of stuff this time.
Blanks assortment and some other supplies for the venture.
Now all I need is more pen kits and it's a roll. I couldn't decide on another style though right now.
So it was in their best interest to give a little. I sure didn't expect it. But I sure appriceate it.
By the way, they have some great deals on blank assortments. Stuff I'd never concider on my own, but in the assortments I'll venture in.
Less than a buck a blank to about a buck for Afican exotics.
CA glue it or use it for pens...... hummmmm..... :)
But don't expect me to be nice all the time... }>
