    Natural edged bowl....

    http://a8.cpimg.com/image/C6/CC/1695...-020001A6-.jpg

Since I finally have a chainsaw, I was FINALLY able to attack that Pear log I've had for a couple months....

I also started putting a sort of "How I did it" kind of thing together on my web site... I know a step-by-step woulda helped me when I first started....

It's not "finished", but I'd appreciate suggestions for improving it...

    Thanks all...

Well looks NICE! The edge seems to be all there.
And I guess the saw did work.

PS> Don't use the chain saw for pen blanks ....

PS2> I JUST have to find my camera and hook it up
so I can post some pics....

    Marc,
Love the walk through on the web page. Really helps out. That bowl you finished looks good. You know I can't offer any opinions on the finish though; I have yet to complete a bowl. Happy turnings.

Marc, that's one HECKUVA good-looking bowl so far!

Keep it quiet when Otter's "on the air", though - maybe she won't notice if that pear tree in our front yard comes up missing one of these days. I don't have much time left before the sap starts to rise!

EDIT: I've never tried to cut a rough round that way before, with a template attached to its backside. Now I'm gonna hafta go down to the shop & try it!

    RE: Natural edged bowl....

Marc......nice tutorial but I would like to suggest that more attention be brought to the hollowing out methods. It looks as if you are starting on the outer bowl area and working towards the center with small cuts from out to in.

If this works for you thats great ,however I think the more accepted method is to start in the center and work you way out to the outer edge...lets say on a bowl approx. 6" dia, make a 3/4 to 1" deep cut in the center with a rounded bottom using a bowl gouge then work your way to the outside taking as big a bite as you are comfortable with, once you have reached the outside go back to the center and start the process all over, continue this sequence until you have reached approximate depth and wall thickness, then finish up the bottom and sides with a scraper.

The cutting sequence is to cut inward and then rolling the gouge to the center of the bowl cutting a little more depth each time. This info I have read or seen someone do so it may not be 100% correct.,just some food for thought.

BTW, I like the pear wood grain and color is it alwasys that way??

Nice bowl as well, what do you mean its not finished? Whats left to do ??

    RE: Natural edged bowl....

Actually, I did 2 bowls yesterday... 1 is in a bag of shavings drying out, and the other is pictured in my post. I want to see what drying VS finishing does... That was my first attempt at natural edged... I may have set some records in the Sandpaper Hurling contest... those edges try and grab everything!

    RE: Natural edged bowl....

    Thanks Dick... good suggestion...

I basically do hollow out a bowl the way you described... I make a hole in the middle, then make that hole wider, then wider, then sweep from edge to middle in one pass... then repeat... The pic looks funny because I wanted shavings in the picture so I had to do it one handed and take the pic with the other hand :)

    RE: Natural edged bowl....

Great job, Marc. Did you have to stabalize the bark with some CA glue, or were you able to keep it intact with just nature's glue? I guess that is another benefit of green turning, with my firewood logs the bark generally just falls right off as soon as I cut the corners off of the blank.

Like that pearwood. Another of those woods that have not seen a lot of use in cabinetry and other woodworking, though James Krenov seems to use a lot of it, along with apple.
