I turned a chunk of a 2 X 6, and gave it to the receptionist at my fitness center... she loved it... which didn't surprise me.. it's always nice to get an unexpected gift eh?... but it did make me happy to see that look that people get when they're given a surprise gift... the one that says "I'm so happy you thought of me"
It got me to thinking though... In my super-short amount of time that I've been turning, I've already had a couple of times when I didn't do any turning because "I didn't have any decent wood", or thoughts similar to that...
I'm going to make a real effort NOT to "be like that"... I just want to turn!... and the more I turn, the better I get. Most people don't know that it's just a chunk of a 2 X 6... they think it's a smooth, shiny wooden bowl that is pleasing to look at and touch....
You know Mark you probably overlook wood everyday. I get tones of good stuff out of pallets. I don't even pull the nails. Knock em apart, cut the nail holes out and toss em. that way you have no chance of hitting a nail. Check with the local harley dealer. Theres one on the other side of Macon from you. Check the Local kubota dealer, Thats aa fair source for of all things, MAHOGONY. Yep the used to ship all of the stuff in mahogony crates. Check with the local tree services. Most of these guys will hook you up with some decent stuff. Give em a bowl or two in return and it wont be long you will have more stuff to turn than you know what to do with.
Landscapers are another source. It's amazing what can be dug out of good size shrubs that are being replaced. Yew witch is one of those gets some pretty good size trunks on it I brought an ole ander rootball home from my sisters in va. Root balls can result in som pretty stuff. A word of caution though even after a good washing your still going to find dirt and small stones in it.
I'll root around I have some pics of some spalted beech that came from a stump.
It TRW (Turned Real Well) although the EGIAB (End Grain Is A Booger) but I sharpened a fresh edge on my RNS (Round Nose Scraper) and was able to get it BBS (Baby Butt Smooth) :)
>Oh... SYP... OK, got it.

You're a veteran aren't you? :D I used to have entire conversations like that :+
I am remodeling my kitchen and would like help to choose the right kind of material for the countertop. It is the central part of the look and so is most important to choose the best.
Folks,
A guy I knew back from high school now owns the company he dad started. He is a HUGE firearm admirer like I am. He wanted a firearm display case in his office along one wall, but that wall...
I have to replace one of my doors soon. Your information will definitely give me an insight. Now thinking of buying a fiberglass door, what's your opinion on it?
