    I saw a Lady on................

HGTV yesterday afternoon, her name was Lissie or Lizzie> I have heard of her before, she is an elderly lady (70 plus). It showed her prepping a bowl blank from a log section with a chain saw and lifting it into position with a log shain sling and an automotive engine hoist. The estimated weight on the bowl blank was 350 pounds.

The lathe appeared to be a custom built.

She first roughed out the face plate side then flattened the topside. She then ran a heavy parting tool (I think) at a point where she would have about a 2" thick wall in about 1 " and then using this line as a guide she cored it out with a small chain saw and popped it out with a crow bar.

She had a chair or stool setting on the lathe bed so she could set down ,reach in and turn the inside, that kind of took my breath away. When she had finished the turning then the ordeal of finishing started. They said she worked 6 weeks sanding and oiling before she parted it off.

Now this is a little old lady was doing all this herself and alone to boot. I'm sure she had help with the parting off ceremony ,they didn't show that portion, but unless it was all staged ,I actully saw her do the rest (on film).

The finished dimensions were 26" in diameter, approx 10" deep with about a 3/4" wall with beautiful grain, Black Walnut.

Her turning tools appeared to be at least 3' long overall.

Now here I set feeling proud to turn a 12 inch platter and then she comes along and breaks my bubble and makes me realize just what a rookie I am.

We all have to start some where, so lets get to turning guys the women are trying to take over..........you know they already control all the (blank) in the world....lmao,that will be the day,I'm from the old school

I love the show you are talking about and that episode in particular. It is called [link:www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_mas|Modern Masters]. The episode that you (and I) watched was a rerun of a special about Women Masters. One segment profiled Lissi Oland, who for years worked at her husband's side finishing the turned items he made. Mr. Oland was a master in his own right. He died about 3 years ago and rather than retire into near poverty, Lissi just picked up the tools and began turning. It was amazing to watch this 70 year old Norwegian immigrant handle the tools and explain the character of the wood. She is truly an inspiration. Her studio is in Brasstown, NC if any of you are close enough to have a personal look. Pictures of her work are at http://www.olandcraft.com.

    She IS awfully inspiring.

Here's a thought & a visual for alla' youse... picture a (storm-felled) Giant Sequoia bowl blank with a couple of dudes inside... riding dirtbikes around with chainsaws while it spins to hollow it out... :) :) :)
