Question was,Is the dark color a result of Spalting or is it from Minerals in the soil or absorbed into the fibers externally?

And ambrosia beetle poo poo. The dark color is the excrement of the beetle which fills in the hole behind him as he eats his way through and then reacts with the surrounding wood.
Yum. That's probably another one you'll have to stay away from, Dick, as a lot of it also has spalting.
