RE: DaveZ -- what would you do with these hunks o' wood?
The second pic, I'd try a hollow form with a globe shape(faceplate is blue) The rest of it would go to makin some shrooms. Leave a little bark around the "bell" of the shroom. Nice thing is shrooms look better warped and cracked. Might also get some pen blanks out of it.
The other piece on the left I'd make a form as shown, might show three bulleyes in that. On the right a natural edge, trying to use that one wing to my advantage.(faceplate under) Actually either could go as a form or nat edge.
Looks like you got some to play with, have at it;) When I first started gettin wood all I could think of was big, big, big. Now I'm more selective and I'll take small with potential versus big and generic. Lot of good looking stuff in small wood. If you leave the bullseyes in, you can add to the figure at the same time use more of your wood. To avoid cracking, I keep the wall thickness even and keep the piece well oiled for a couple of weeks.
Also, you could put a faceplate anywhere along that log, perpendicular to the grain and get all sorts of forms, vases etc. from it as endgrain turnings

Gee Ken...
If I'd have snagged a new lathe I'd have a smile on my face wider than the Mississippi....if Dave hadn't enlarged the picture I'd never have recognised you.
Congrats on the lathe..did you part exchange the Griz or will you become a two lathe family ?......
RE: DaveZ -- what would you do with these hunks o' wood?
Limester,
I'm not as glum as I look. What you're seeing is simply the result of being the end of a heavy manual labor weekend. Luckily, the photo is not scratch 'n' sniff. I look better this morning after a shave and a shower.
Believe me, I'm smiling on the inside.
The old lathe goes up for sale. I would love to have two lathes, however , I just don't have the space.

Give me a shout when you're ready...
Holly has graduated from the small Pencrafter and it's as much as I can do to stop her from monopolising the Deever...:)
I keep telling her that the Crafstman is her next step but the rattle that drives me beserk also "gets" to her so I think it will have to go.. she's hankering after a DVR of her own so I got to do something quick.
BTW Scratch and Sniff would have been OTT the aroma drifted southward against a prevailing wind :) :)
RE: DaveZ -- what would you do with these hunks o' wood?
Yup green, with a natural edge turning I have no fear ;) Let the sob warp. This is gonna have 4 piths in it from what I can tell, that could be problematic or not, we'll see. I never turned pin cherry before and I don't know if it will play nice or not yet. Looks more like birch bark than cherry bark on it, FYI
DaveZ -- what would you do with these hunks o' wood?
Or anyone else for that matter. I was out cleaning up around the property today. Cutting down mostly scrubby pines and cleaning up dead-falls. But there was this one tree...cherry I think, that had some interesting stuff going on. Bigger piece is about 4-5" diameter, and has a couple of areas of burl(circled). In the other pic (I included myself for scale) you can see a gnarly little burl right by my shirt design.
RE: DaveZ -- what would you do with these hunks o' wood?
This is a piece of pin cherry, that was cut from the same type log and condition as where I marked your log above with a blue faceplate. I'm gonna try a nat edge first and if it don't look like it's gonna work, I'll adjust my fire and redesign, lol!
I completely concur with the solid wood door particularly when it has a excellent end and also top quality variety. It's a traditional and definately will match up virtually all types of equipment....
I enjoy podium furniture, as well as are thrilled to own a single. Because there exists a transferable task, will it be dissembled whenever you transfer? Found over hyperlinks. are all awesome.

Nice Forum!
I just purchased a Hitachi 10" compound miter saw (C10FCE2) and it has an aluminum base. What is the best way to care for this aluminum base? Butchers Wax? WD-40 now and then?
