peach tree turning???
Has anyone had any experience turning wood from peach trees? Or have any knowledge about it?
I know there's not a lot of usable trunk on a peach tree(bout a foot or so for good/small turning), but a friend of the family is pushing up 20 acres of them and I would hate to see it all get burned when there's some good possible turnings there.
Thanks!!!

Peach is beautiful and smells great. The only hitch it is cracks like a mad bastidge. Mill out the pith and get it waxed or rough turned quickly. Boil or alcohol it. Anything that will help with checks.
By the way, wereabouts are you? A true gift would be showing up at your nearest turning club meeting with about a tonne of peach logs.

RE: peach tree turning???
Peach is easily one of my favorites. I only had a few small chunks, but I absolutely loved it.
Enjoy.

RE: peach tree turning???
Peach tree is a really very nice wood to turn, it is difficult to find as normally the trunk are relatively small, of no interest to the normal wood stores, it is very difficult to dry to avoid cracks.
I am lucky enough to live in the middle of a “peach country” and every year, growers replace quite a few of them, tearing apart the old ones. Not only it does not cost anything, but they nearly pay you to take away the trunk with the roots. So I have drying a few hundred trunks from 25 to 35 cm diameter drying…. IN MY CELLAR. I know, it takes longer, but thanks to the constant temperature and moisture of the cellar it does not crack. On the edge of the trunk I put some wax, and on the roots cuts as well.

RE: peach tree turning???
Thanks for the info on the peach trees! I'm very excited to get a few and let them dry; then do a little turning to see how they look.
One more question though.....how long does it usually take for them to dry? (I live in Alabama) so humidity pretty much sits on us all summer long. Thanks again for the help!

RE: peach tree turning???
It depends how you have cut the log.
We have here (with a fair degree of humidity in the summer) a rule of thumb which says one year/1,5 inch...
Beware this wood craks easyly. When you have prepared yur blanks do not forget to anchor them, store them in the shade...
Have patience!
