Mystery Plane
Here are pictures of one of the planes I don't have an identity for. The bottom blade is stamped with Stanley Rule & Level Co. Any idea of which plane this is, when it was made and what the heck the top blade was for? Pictures at http://www.thedragonslair.com/mystery_plane.htm. I got lazy with the posting so all pictures are on one page. My apologies to the dial-up people.

Intrigueing...not seen anything like that before and a quick flick through the Supertools site didn't help.If you don't get any help identifying it here then perhaps you should send some pics to a second hand dealer/enthusiast to see what you got before touching it.

He's a real honest guy who would tell you straight up if you had a treasure rather than try and buy it from you cheap..mention my name if you like ..he's helped me with replacement parts for several of my "old" finds and is very reasonable pricewise and a gem of a man to deal with.
Let us know...from the frog setting it looks quite old..I'd stick my neck out and say very old >100 years...(probably way off) but I'm watching this thread in anticipation.

I, too, am clueless as far as the maker/vintage of that plane. Most likely, the iron is a replacement, so the actual maker could be any number of other makers, either one of the big names or a more localized manufacturer. And I also agree that Walt would be a good source of info. He hangs out a lot at:

If it's what I think it is, then it's REAL OLD.
Notice the lack of lateral adjustment, or am I just missing it in the picture?

No lateral adjustment.

One other thing, it looks like the sides and sole were one piece and the rest of it was riveted onto the base. Also has a definate radius from the sides to the sole. Not a sharp edged, like it was broke up and not milled/cast.

look at the decal on top of the blade:

it looks very similar to yours:

types look a little different as far as frog and cap iron, but I think it's a rare Bailey Defiance plane ..
Edit in: My mistake .. I grabbed your pic, sent it to photoshop .. and zoomed in on the iron .. yours has a logo of Stanley Rule, and I can't make out the flat row under the label, but it's probably Stanley Rule and Lever Co .. if that's still the case, it still was made in the late 1800's ... i'll see if i can find a number for you and some info on it ...

OK Mystery solved. I called the guy Limey told me about. Great guy btw, really great guy. We talked and hmmed and haaed for about 15 minutes with no luck. He said it was a transition plane but not quite sure what it was. Told me he would email me back tommorow after he researched it. An hour later he called me with the verdict. He said he couldn't wait to get home to solve the puzzle so did it right then. It is a #104 Liberty Bell Smoother with a Gage cap, circa 1877-1918. Seems somewhere the cap was broken or lost and being the type of people that make do with what they have, the cap was replaced with a Gage one, hence the second blade. He told me if he comes accross the cap, he will call me but I will probably leave it the way it is as it is sort of piece of my history. Plane will be gently cleaned up and I will post pictures of it when I am done.
