How much is a Stanley Bailey #2 Type 11?
While in our flea market today, I saw a Stanley #2 in pretty good condition. The tote has a hairline crack that was repaired but the japanning looks really good. The sole has a few scratch lines but I think can be sanded out easily. I didn't notice any rust or pitting. I know the guy selling it is a regular there and can easily check again next week if it is not yet sold.
It is pricey but wondering if you guys have any idea how much it normally goes for. I would really like to know if it has re-sale potential on eBay ;).
I checked there but cannot seem to find any #2. I know that eBay is very erratic so a price range will probably be best.
Thanks!!
Dario :)

RE: How much is a Stanley Bailey #2 Type 11?
Dario,
Put it this way..it's going to be a lot more money than it's worth as a tool. If you want to buy it as an investment then the current price range is about $150 - $200 or more depending on the condition and strength of the market.
Hairline cracks in the Tote are not a major detraction but what will greatly affect the value is the collection of different parts that make the whole.
If it has been assembled from good parts of different eras then it will not be worth anything like as much.
Here again if you want one as a novelty then it,s not important.
I can't think of any applications where a #2 is essential. A block plane or similar will perform the same function.
Tool Collector or Tool user ...

RE: How much is a Stanley Bailey #2 Type 11?
Thanks Limey. The asking price was higher than the range you gave, it is $225.00. As to whether it is a "Frankeinplane" :D ...I am not sure. All the parts looks matching but who knows. I though they sell for more than that. Oh well, I am not willing to gamble $225 that may end up as dust collector in my garrage. Might as well buy that ShopFox dust collector for less money.
Now that's an idea!!! :D }>

I'd offer $175..cash in hand...show him the money...flea dealers usually have a 20-30% margin...kinda giving away my secrets here...might not be a great investment at that price..but they're a cute little plane to use..kinda like a block on steroids. They'll only go up in the future, unless you can find one at a tag or estate sale on the cheap....you just never know

RE: How much is a Stanley Bailey #2 Type 11?
Well,
I just recently bought three Stanley Baily planes on ebay.
Killer prices compared to what I see so far in this thread.
#7c Jointer plane - $35.00 including shipping. Wood in perfect condition, and only minor cleanup needed.
#5c Jack plane - $35.00 including shipping. Wood perfect, and only minor cleanup needed
#3 Smooth plane - $32.00 including shipping. Wood perfect, minor cleanup needed. Blade badly needs sharpening.
As compared to brand new planes in the Rockler catalog, the comparable price for these three planes is around $1000.00
I don't know about a #2, but I am going to look at ebay over the next few days. If I see a posting I will let you know about it.
I have seen tons of planes selling in the $25 - $50 range. Unless a #2 is quite RARE, I would not offer anyone over $50.00 for it.

RE: How much is a Stanley Bailey #2 Type 11?
Leo,
I did get 2 of your PM :). I am familiar with eBay...been bidding and selling for about 5 years now.
Stanley Bailey #2 is getting scarce...not quite as rare as a #1 but getting collectible as well. The post was just triggered by me stumbling on seller at the local flea market. I am not really on the market to buy but more on checking if it is worth buying for resale.
After my post, I checked eBay again and found a few #2's. Limey's price is right on the money...similar ones range from $175-$200....might go higher since they are not ended yet but maybe not much more. I am not ready to invest/gamble that much on a plane though....have other stuff I want/need to buy first.
Seems like you are getting great bargains there...care to show us some pics? :)

RE: How much is a Stanley Bailey #2 Type 11?
Dario,
Seems that I jumped the gun a bit too fast here. Looks like #1 and #2 are in fact a bit rare. I did find a few that presently have bids less than $100.00
I have on several occasions won an auction by asking the seller to close his auction and I made an offer. For instance you could ask the seller of the #1 listed below to close his auction and you could offer $75.00 including shipping. Worst that can happen is that he sais no. Maybe he will say yes.
Anyway, below are the #1's and #2's under $100. There are 20 or so #3's in the $20-$40 range. There is also an abundance of #4 #5 #6 #7 Stanley planes all under $50.
Just trying to help.

RE: How much is a Stanley Bailey #2 Type 11?
I'm guessing that last one might get bid up a little higher than the $9.99 it's sitting at now :)
