Shaving
It's no big secrete that I sport a beard. I just hate to shave. But, I love this type of shaving....

I've honed the blade on the cabinet scraper to 45* then drew a burr. I am wondering if this would make a card scraper "better" by doing the same? Currently I file my card scrappers flat, then draw a 15* or less hook.
edit: sorry about the picture size. Seems as if Photobucket wants to either post a very small or very large one..

RE: Shaving
Wow! Those shavings look mighty fine to me, I'm not sure I'd want to do anything different! Is that a shop-made scraper holder? If so, I'd be real interested in seeing how it's put together.

RE: Shaving
It's one of [link:www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?DeptID=2068&FamilyID=4712|these] Erin. I figured for the price, why not. I do plan on making my own using this one as a start and making some channges. Brass knob/screws. Larger hand hold on the sides. This one does work fine though and it cost allot less than [link:www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?DeptID=2068&FamilyID=3225|this one].
If you want, I'll e-mail you pictures when i get around to making mine. I plan on making two of them.

I'd appreciate that - it looks like it would be a neat little shop project. I don't mind too much just holding the card scraper, but it is fatiguing and my hands tend to cramp up pretty quickly. I noticed with my last project that I ended up with some very fine ridges on my finished surface. I'm given to understand that this is a result of not putting an arc on the card scraper when using it. They weren't visible till I started putting the shellac on - not even when I wiped down with mineral spirits. Boy, how a nice finish highlights every little flaw in the surface prep! :)

RE: Shaving
They really do a fine job Erin.
The holder keeps the card at the
right angle. I find that I can use
the scraper for longer periods than
I can with out the holder. This one
could use some improvements in the hand
hold area. If I don't get around to getting
one made in the near future think about
spending the $11 that this one cost.
With the hardware and figure that scrap
wood is "free" I figure I'll be able to make
mine for $5-6 going all brass for the hardware.

RE: Shaving
Yep, shellac is bad about that. First time I used it on a raised panel project I thought I had all of the marks from the TS blade removed. Started laying the shellac on and stuff started just popping out. Ended up having to strip the shellac and use sandpaper (yuck).
Bending the scraper adds significant stiffness to it which keeps it from stuttering across the wood. Else you could do like David Marks does and get you a good thick piece of spring steel, round off the corners like on a plane blade so they don't dig in, and that will alleviate the stutter. Of course you do have to hold it like you're bending that arc like he does. :)
Nice looking shavings, there, Ken.

Very nice shavings. ;) I like my card scraper but still have a ways to go with learning how to use it on the small pieces I use. Puts down a sweet surface for sure though.

RE: Shaving
Those shavings look great to me, too.
That reminds me that I really need to put a new burr on my #80 scraper, and clean up those 3 vintage card scrapers that belonged to my wife's grandfather or great grandfather.
