RE: Sources to buy vintage planes, not ebay or other auction

I've been to Freeport and Angleton one time a few years back. I'm a native also, but was a military dependent brat and grew up all over.

Rust is real scarce around Central Texas. Every once in a while I'll stumble on an old hand saw. For some reasons the antique places don't put such outrageous prices on saws as they do on handplanes around here. That's why I was glad to find out about Dowds.

It seems the Dowds have a reputation which precede them. They had an assortment of user-ready jointers and other items to choose from.

I think I just sealed a sale for a Stanley #8, and a transitional to be named later; I'll post pictures of what I got as soon as I get them. My very first planes!

Am I supposed to feel a rush of excitement and pleasure?

Down the slippery slope, and a plane under either arm. Oh dear...

Good for you. Someone should have warned you against getting two though. Seems they get up to no good after the lights go out in the shop, and pretty soon you have a whole shop full. Don't exactly know how that happens, but it's a known fact that it does.

Might as well order yourself [link:www.amazon.com/gp/product/1561581550/qid=1138338203/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/104-6289572-6751101?s=books&v=glance&n=283155|The Hand Plane Book] while your at it. You're going to need it. Required reading for anyone lurking in these parts.

    Enjoy!

RE: Sources to buy vintage planes, not ebay or other auction

Another thread here finally got my initiative up to put up a new page on my website concerning some basic terminology and uses. By no means a complete diatribe on hand planes, but a decent start as far as what some of them do, how to set them up and the like.

    Here is a link,

or you can go to the main page in my signature line and then click on "Plane Confusion".

    Hey y'all,

I'm about to complete the transaction for this lovely couple of planes.

They're meant for each other, aren't they? Is it okay for me to gush? I mean, I'm just so happy for them. And me.

I almost never cry at weddings.

Meet Mr. and Mrs. No. 8 and No. 24 Stanley.
