I don't know about it being a bad idea. Those usually go for more than $100 (sans the repaired crack, and if the repair was done right, it shouldn't cause any problems.

That's the big unknown. I guess I won't know for about a week.

What I can see in the pic, it looks like a nicely done weld (no huge burnt metal slag deposits or the like) and was also cleaned up afterward. Chances are good that the repair was done by someone who knew what they were doing. Call me an optimist (never thought I'd be saying that referring to myself) but I think you're gonna be happy.

A thirty second can be fixed quickly enough by someone who understands how to hold a casting on a surface grinder or even fly-cut on a milling machine.
    Measure once... cut twice.

As to the width, I believe that it is the same width as it's little brothers, the 10 1/4 and the 10 1/2. Allowed Stanley to have to make only a single width blade with the different configuration.

Chances are, in its role as a rabbet plane, 2 1/8" of width is well in excess of what one might need.

It may be a bit closer to 3/32". My feeler gauge set only goes to 0.025", so I'm not sure how accurate a reading I got. I think when the one side broke (probably due to being dropped) the front may have bent a little. I'm too hesitant to try and fix this on my belt sander.

My FIL is a professional machinist (and has taught a machining class part time at their local college for many years)... I bet he can mill a little off the bottom and still keep the sole at 90 degrees to the sides... I'll have to inquire.

In the meantime, I should still be able to utilize it without too many problems in the uses I had in mind.

And I probably won't be building too many carriages this year. ;)

Not planned, but perhaps warranted. :+

Oh dear. I couldn't help myself. I've been wanting one of these for quite a while.

I know it's been cracked and repaired, but the repair doesn't look too awfully bad, and I was looking for a user not a collectible, and my FIL is a machinist so I think I could get some assistance with re-welding if needed, and I'm not rough with my tools so I'm unlikely to re-crack that weld unless I accidentally drop the plane. And the kicker was...nobody else bid on it, so I got it for $50. That's 1/4 the price that they typically go for.

    I know...probably a bad idea to buy it, but like I said: I couldn't help myself. <sigh>
