Height of stair railing???
I am rebuilding my front hall stairway... and wonder about the height of the railing.
Anybody have a clue as to how it is defined? Do you measure from the edge of the tread (giving the lowest height), the back of the tread (giving the max), or somewhere in the middle?
Thanks.

Pete,
Isn't that what I said? ;)
My source? Architectural Graphic Standards, pg.7 UBC Stair Chart, although I did fail to note that tread minum, riser maximum, handrail height, and ramp incline are governed by local or state codes...My bad.

Figured those were covered in his original post, Timmer. They weren't so at the risk of being verbose, thought I'd put them in.

No, my bad. My intent was to agree, w/ visual aids, in case Jim would care for more than one opinion. Apparently I didnt come off that way. Sorry.

To All...
I appreciate the quick responses -- from a variety of directions.
I have it laid out now just a bit shy of the 33" mark, so I will adjust and verify with the town.
I had noticed the 7 replies and began to wonder if I had hit a sore topic or something. :) Anyway, thanks again.

Are you doing open tread or closed tread?

From the Coffman stair building guide. Where to measure rail height.
