RE: Red Oak Stair Landings.
Okay guys,
I finally got around to scanning that Womans Day Specials magazine my wife found that article in.
Please see the following link: http://www.slshipp.com/zoo/ayala/pho...ineArticle.pdf
But I wanted to share with you guys what I think my Stairs will wind up looking like.
Check this out. I drew this using AutoDesk Building Systems 2005.

RE: Red Oak Stair Landings.
Hey guys,
Just wanted to give everyone here an update. I stained the outer edges of my stair treads and landings on Saturday. I prepared the taping all day long on Sunday using my new laser level that casts vertical & horizontal lines. It worked pretty slick. All of my tape lines match up properly. I also used that Paper-Taper tool to protect the newley stained treads and landings.
Late last night I applied a tinted primer with Pumus in it for grip, its a product by the name of No Skid. I bough some paint used for decking and had a few paint swatches for the boys at Rhoda to match up for me. I think that by the end of the day today, I'll have both coats of the main body painted onto the stairs.
Enjoy some pictures.

RE: Red Oak Stair Landings.
I just wanted to let you guys know that I Successfully put two coats of the maroon paint on the stair treads, landings, and risers. I'm going home in a couple of hours to continue working on this, however, I need to inspect the paint finish thoroughly.
I want to determine weather or not I need to put a 3rd coat of paint for the maroon body.
As things stand now. I have the Stair treads installed, two new landings made (glue-ups) and installed. Risers have been coverd by Gypsum board, and primered, and painted. There are a few more details I have to take care of, its all in the details. I have a stripe running through it and a border all around the edge.
The taping and prep alone will take me for ever just to get to the next step, but in the end I know it will all be worth it.
I have no pictures to share right now because all there is to take pictures of right now are maroon stairs with that Paper-Taper surrounding the stair edges. It's kind of messy right now and the taping for the next part will be even messier.
But I'll take pictures tonight before I start the taping for the inner strypes.
On a side note, you know how I was talking about that pumus in the primer. It feels really good on my feet when I walked down the stairs this morning. There's no way I'll slip on these stairs!

RE: More Photos of my Stair project.
Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it. Unfortunately the Modest Silver paint bled under the tape where the wood grain is exposed on the treads and landings. My tape lines are not sharp because of that.
But I just went out to the Arts & Media store in downtown Portland, OR and bought myself some fine tip brushes and empty bottles for the touch-up I have to do tonight. I'll be finishing the touch up tonight and tomorrow I want to paint the outer edges of the risers to match the Modest Silver paint of the walls and the Striping details.
Wednesday I want to start the taping for the Edge Runner detail I'll be applying around the perimiter of the Cranberry Jam Paint. I probably won't have enough time to paint the black edge detail until Thursday or Friday night. I kind of want this upcoming weekend to apply several coats of Clear to protect the stained wood and the overall Paint Job. I wonder what Kind of Maintenance Issues I'll have?
Does anyone have any suggestions for a clear coat application that will work over stained Oak and Painted surfaces?
Oh, on a side note, I went to see the Green Day concert here in Portland last week. They had a really good show.

RE: More Photos of my Stair project.
Dang,
This touch up is killing me. In the past 3 days all I've done is 2 risers and 2 treads. The productivity has really slowed to a crawl. There are so many little bleeds I have to clean up that it is taking me literally 2 hours per stair.
I come home from Downtown Portland at about 6:30pm to 7:00pm on a daily basis. I have dinner then get started on the stair paint. It then takes me until 10:00pm til 11:00pm to finish each stair.
I took the day off of my stair project on Tuesday eavening because I passed out watching the eavening news just after dinner. I woke up the next morning and realized I was going to be late for work if I didn't get a move on.
Damn this touch up is slow work. But I'm determined to finish it up. Cross your fingers and wish me luck. I looks like this will take me until next week to finish up if I work the entire weekend.
Jay

RE: More Photos of my Stair project.
They're looking good, though. You'll be really happy with it when you've completed it just the way you want.
If it makes you feel any better - at least you've got all winter to complete your project. I'm trying to get some external house painting done (board and batten, window trim, and shutters) before it gets too cold. I live in Maine so I'm nearly out of weekends (if I can get any more when it isn't raining), and it's getting dark between 6:30 and 7:00 now, so I don't get much time after work.

RE: More Photos of my Stair project.
Well, hey guys.
It took me a lot longer then I though to do some serrious touch up to clean up all of the paint which bled under my tape. It was a lot of bent-over back-aching work but I think the results speak for themselves. Take a look at these photographs. I'll continue onto my next phase which is painting the sides of the risers to mach the Modest Silver paint of the walls. I have to prep it with my paper-taper and get it ready for the paint tonight.
Take a look at these photos and compare with my previous results, you will see that the lines are clean, and strait.
